Your IP shows the wrong country — here is why
Platforms compare the address country with your device, payment and account. A mismatch is a signal. Most of the time it is not the platform being wrong.
- Three things can disagreeThe registry (who owns the range and in which country), the geolocation database (where traffic appears to come from) and the ASN (which network announces it). They are maintained separately and update at different speeds.
- Cause 1: stale geolocationGeoLite2 / DB-IP are rebuilt on different schedules. An address can legally move country and stay in the old database for weeks.
- Cause 2: range reassignmentISPs reallocate blocks. The registry updates first, geolocation lags. A "new" residential range can still look like its previous country.
- Cause 3: mislabelled proxy poolA vendor sells "Germany" and delivers an ASN announced from the Netherlands with a German city in the old database. The label was wrong, not the platform.
Tips
- Compare RDAP country with geolocation country, not just one of them.
- Check the ASN and who announces the prefix — that is the strongest signal.
- Re-check in 48 hours: a stable mismatch is a real problem, a one-off may be a database lag.
FAQ
Is geolocation ever exact?
No. It is an estimate. City-level is often wrong even for genuine residential addresses; country-level is much more reliable.
Should I reject a pool for a city mismatch?
For most platforms the country matters and the city does not. Judge by what you are doing, not by a city label.
What do I ask the supplier?
The exact range, its registry country, and the ASN. If they cannot name the ASN, the country claim is unverifiable.
