How to check an IP for free
You do not need a paid API to reject a bad address. You need four checks and one honest reading of the result.
Four checks, five minutes
- Type: is it hosting, CDN, VPN, Tor or a normal ISP range?
- Registry: who owns the range and in which country (RDAP).
- History: does the address appear on abuse or blacklist feeds?
- Consistency: does the same IP still look the same tomorrow?
What free tools miss
Free lookups usually skip residential proxy networks and abuse history. They also rarely tell you the ASN mix of a whole pool — that is where a batch check earns its money.
Read the result like an adult
A clean result is not a pass. A bad result is not always a no: some platforms tolerate datacenter addresses for internal tools. Decide by what you are doing with the address.
